Anna Bunting-Branch | Warm Worlds or Otherwise
Warm Worlds and Otherwise by Anna Bunting-Branch features a new Virtual Reality (VR) artwork commissioned by Wysing Arts Centre, The Mechatronic Library, FACT and QUAD.
The exhibition relates to Bunting-Branch’s interest in the encounters between feminist practice and science fiction—engaging painting, digital animation and Virtual Reality to explore ideas of worldbuilding, embodied perception and technologies of representation.
Central to the project is META (2019), an experimental 360-degree VR animation transforming the artists’ hand-painted characters, props and backdrops into an immersive virtual story world. Also included is the new installation AU Sandbox (2020) which expands her imagined worlds, and an accompanying ambient sound piece by artist Aliyah Hussain that underscores the viewer’s experience in the gallery space as well as in the virtual environment.
The first iteration of Warm Worlds and Otherwise was presented at Wysing Arts Centre in October 2018, with subsequent presentations being developed for FACT (2019) and QUAD (2020). Warm Worlds and Otherwise is supported using public funding by Arts Council England.
Dryden Goodwin | Alongside
Alongside (2019) is a sensory study by artist Dryden Goodwin of the working life of a social care worker, supporting three vulnerable disabled adult clients, as they access the world beyond the day-care centre.
This most intimate and delicate of jobs is rendered through Goodwin’s camera lens, pencil drawings and layered soundtrack, to create a moving inquiry into proximity and empathy. For the exhibition, accompanying the 24-minute film will be the original drawings created by Goodwin during the making of the film.
Alongside is a co-commission between QUAD and Animate Projects as part of the WORK Project.
Part of QUAD's Co-Lab Season.
A five-week showcase in QUAD Gallery of newly co-commisioned digital and film work, plus participation activities.
Dryden Goodwin | WORK
Throughout 2019 the artist and filmmaker Dryden Goodwin will be creating a new film, a new commission for QUAD, focusing on the working life of a Derby based care-worker. The film will explore the interactions and connections between care-worker and clients in an intimate expanded portrait. Goodwin’s work often seeks to reveal people, places or issues that are overlooked or uncelebrated. He uses drawing, film, photography, sound and animation to make connections with his subjects through conversations and dialogue, exploring aspects of the inner and emotional life of the people he studies. His films and drawing works have been shown nationally and internationally in museums, galleries and cinemas.
WORK is two-year programme developed by Animate Projects involving four artists working with four partners exploring ideas and the realities of what ‘work’ means for the ways we live today. The four partners are Fermynwoods, Junction Arts, Vivid, and QUAD.
