3D Virtual Exhibition Tour

In November 2023, Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist will present ‘Prickling Goosebumps & a Humming Horizon,’ a major two-part exhibition of new and recent sculptural works and projections, opening in Chelsea. This multisensory experience will take place simultaneously at Hauser & Wirth’s 22nd Street location and Luhring Augustine’s 24th Street location. Rist explores internal and external spaces, reimagining Luhring Augustine as an expansive ‘backyard’ and Hauser & Wirth as a whimsical ‘collective living room.’

Artistic Gestures and Environments

Upon arrival, visitors will be greeted with ‘Textile Simultaneity’ at Luhring Augustine and ‘Innocent Collection’ at Hauser & Wirth. At Luhring Augustine, the journey begins through a ‘backyard’ environment, animated with sounds, colors, and textures. The entrance gallery features new works like ‘Visual Cortex Dolomites,’ a landscape painting, and ‘Respect Scholarly Rock,’ a rock sculpture, both activated by video projections. The main gallery showcases ‘Neighbors Without Fences’ (2020), a full-scale clapboard house façade, surrounded by a courtyard with outdoor furniture and anchored by ‘The Patience’ (2016), a massive boulder with dynamic projections.

Interactive Video Sculptures

Each window of the clapboard façade in the main gallery displays a screen with new videos from Rist’s ‘Peeping Freedom Shutters’ series (2020-2023), paying homage to women’s rights activists. The back gallery presents ‘Big Skin’ (2022), an installation with semi-translucent resin panels floating from the ceiling, displaying video projections of galaxies and landscapes.

Transformative Spaces at Hauser & Wirth

At Hauser & Wirth, the street-level space becomes a ‘living room’ painted in reds and greens. Here, visitors will find single-channel sculptural video works, including ‘Ich brenne für dich (I burn for you)’ (2018) in an antique marble fireplace mantle, and ‘Über Stock und Stein (Over Hill and Dale)’ (2023) in a vintage toy horse stable. ‘Metal Flake Milk Tooth’ (2023), a new group of sculptures, lies across the gallery floor, reflecting Rist’s fascination with light. These fiberglass composite sculptures are coated with metal flakes and candy colors, demanding three-dimensional engagement.

Immersive Video Projections and Installations

Two new major video projections, ‘Welling Color Island East’ (2023) and ‘Welling Color Island West’ (2023), alongside the moving light installation ‘Petting Colors’ (2023), complete Rist’s interior adventure at Hauser & Wirth. The projections swirl onto carpet islands with cushioned seating for communal immersion. ‘Petting Colors’ gently moves lights across the room, connecting visitors with each other and Rist’s works, making the public active participants in the exhibition.
