This exhibition explores individual and collective experiences, recognising that factors, including gender, social status, age, disability, location, race, sexuality, and religion or belief, impact people differently. To better represent Derbyshire’s past and present, as we continue to develop our galleries, we want to consider who we represent, and how we represent them, with you.

Including Derbyshire’s history makers, such as Florence Nightingale, Alice Wheeldon, Mary Pickford, Marion Adams, Dame Margaret Beckett, Bess of Hardwick, Freda Bedi and Preet Chandi MBE, we take visitors on a chronological journey, highlighting individual stories against a timeline of events that affected the lives of history makers across Derbyshire.

The ‘Respond and Reimagine’ displays have been produced by Sonya Robotham and Anisha Parmar. Their work has been funded by the Art Fund’s Respond and Reimagine programme, supporting responses to the needs exposed by the pandemic and reimagining the work and role of arts and cultural organisations.

The History Makers Project Lab is a space where questions can be asked, ideas shared and open conversations supported to encourage dialogue and deepen the understanding between people who may not always share the same opinions.

In the Project Lab we celebrate local community-led groups and organisations who have developed their own displays and where we will host an exciting programme of events and workshops to create a lasting legacy in the museum’s permanent galleries which will be explored with the public. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for more information on these events.

Come and explore inspirational stories and consider what it means to make history past and present. In this exhibition and project lab, join with some amazing organisations and individuals from across the county, to consider how we might empower and support history makers now and in the future.
